Provenance: Unconfirmed
Condition: Remarkably rock-like

The object arrived without paperwork, historical significance, or an especially interesting story.

It is a rock.

Its surface is uneven. Its color is difficult to describe with enthusiasm. Its principal achievement appears to be existing without incident.

And yet, once placed beneath glass, illuminated from above, and assigned an acquisition number, it developed a certain authority.

Visitors may wonder whether it is ancient, rare, symbolic, or expensive.

The Museum has uncovered no compelling evidence for any of these possibilities.

The rock has offered no clarification.

Curator’s Observation

A pedestal can change what people expect from an object without changing the object itself.

Museum note: Please refrain from asking the rock to explain its significance.
